Nails for the Professional Woman

When it comes to your hands you may think that no one notices but your fingernails say a lot about who you are as a person. With all of the creative nail designs and shapes that we have today a can sometimes be a challenge in deciding what to ask your manicurist for. When it comes to professional women, however, more than self-expression meets the eye. But the real question is who’s eyes?

Without a doubt the way you groom your nails can give off a particular message which in some cases may not help you climb up the corporate ladder. Just because the trend may be a particular shape or a custom polish may not necessarily be the best choice. But what is acceptable and what you’re willing to live with maybe two different things.

First, let’s look at the different types of nail shapes for you to consider.

Kylie Jenner may have kicked off the ‘stiletto’ which is nothing new. You may remember your grandmother having long pointed nails. While those are great for giving a back scratch, they may not be what your boss is looking for. Depending on the line of work that you do this retro sharp nail shape may give off the wrong message.

Despite their stunning, the ‘coffin’ shape may be more acceptable on people like Barbra Streisand and not the vice president of marketing. The other issue is the length of your nails. The coffin shape tends to be a longer style compared to the square or round. If you are someone who spends multiple hours on the keyboard, you may want to consider a shorter version.

The most popular nail shapes would be square, oval, round and ‘squoval’ which is a hybrid between square and oval. The difference would be rounded edges as opposed to sharp and precise.

Another elegant shape to consider is that of ‘almond’ which tends to be a long in length and tapers off towards the tip but is rounded. Whichever shape you decide to keep in mind that activities such as typing, dialing a phone and opening boxes tend to wear on the shape in a short period of time. That holds true even with acrylic nails.

Now let’s discuss color. Color trends will come and go. While that is safe to say selecting a color that is neutral and subdued is your safest bet. French and American manicures are always safe and look elegant no matter what’s trending.

Stay away from bright colors, patterns, polka dots and weird color schematics. That is, unless your corporate officers will not scoff at your selection. It’s safe to say clean, conservative nails are best for professional women.

The dress code may be more liberal in fields such as art, fashion, retail, etc. but in verticals that are more conservative make sure that your choice of nail design proceeds.

Another thing to note is to make sure that your nails are always well manicured and clean. People will notice when your nail polish is chipped or peeling. They will also notice when your cuticles are dry and scaly. A biweekly visit to your manicurist will ensure that your nails are always looking their best.

Of course, these are a few suggestions for you to consider prior to your visit with your manicurist. However, only you know what’s best for the goals you’re trying to achieve.
